"Deux Ex Machina" is a saying which translates as "God By Machine". It refers to an implausible ending where everything is solved and justice is served. The "implausible ending" is usually something very much like what happens in Tartuffe. From out of nowhere, DING, everything is solved, and everyone lives happily ever after.
Needless to say, when I got to the "Deux Ex Machina", I was very disappointed. I am not sure what I expected Orgon and his family to do in order to get out of their predicament, but I certainly had not expected this. My theory is that "Deux Ex Machina" is used by authors when they have written themselves into a corner. The ending of Tartuffe does not fit with the rest of the story, and is a bit of a let down. Ignoring the zippy ending, Tartuffe was pretty good.
